Wednesday 30th July 2008

Well, we are off to stay at the woods next week for the week with our youngest, as the older two are visiting relatives We are all ready to explore the area, looking for ancient sites etc. Also start preparing a place to put a Round house if we can and some compost loos

It has been a while since we have been up there so we will need to cut back the track for access, thin a few more trees for the camping area, and do any maintenance that may need doing up there

It would be great to have Tribal Living Gathering up there sometime...it is still an aim of ours but we really need to sort the track out for vehicles, which could take a lot to do at the moment... but anyway we will go and suss it more next week ...woooo hoooo I can't wait

Today we took Torr for his 2 and half year check up .... and all is well... he is tall for his age (but then Stonesy is 6 ft 3 and I am 5 ft 11 ish)...in fact the other day he proved that by being nearly a head taller than a little boy who is a few days apart in age from him ....and his weight is an average for his age so all is cool there too We had the usual discussions with the Health Visitor, on being vegan and not having vaccinations but hey I have heard it all before, and they know I know my stuff so don't question it too much... and we had the usual "well the rest of the population are vaccinated so your child will be ok because of that"...which couldn't be further from my beliefs on the subject, and I have never used that as part of the reason for not vaccinating... in fact I don't believe that at all, as many vaccinated children still get the virus even though vaccinated. She did say that measles was about again but again my belief is if a child is emotionally, physically and mentally well they will get through anything with lots of love and TLC... ...actually for rural Cumbria they have been very supportive on our decisions about bringing up Torr vegan and not having vaccinations. And to be honest I like going to check ups like today as it proves children can be very healthy and normal size if they are brought up vegan

Although, recently it has miffed me some what to hear the recent proposals by the current government to give £200 to each family per child if they have their vaccinations, and get educated etc... what a load of Bull!!! Another way to bribe people because the powers that be can make more out of vaccinations. Anyway, I could go on for ages about all of that and have researched it in depth for some time before taking the decision I did with Lewis and now Torr... so I do feel like I have had an informed choice which I think many parents don't have sadly or don't really know they have!!

Anyway, potty training is going well and Torr has successfully done no 2's several times now in his potty He is growing up fast but is amazingly astute for his age

And before I finish I must say how proud I am off my eldest son Lewis who recently got another out standing report for school...he is doing so well in all his subjects and they really like him at the school too..... and I am sooooo proud of him.... especially as he has been through a lot for someone so young in relation to his real biological dad dying when he was five, which led him to be putting on the special needs register at his first school in Sussex, because he was grieving and finding it hard to cope ...and they were far from sympathetic to the fact he was grieving and in my opinion didn't deal with the situation at all well really in hind sight... Anyway, thankfully that was over 3 years ago now and we are now living in Cumbria, and is doing exceptionally well at a lovely village school

...so well done him

The Zen of Potty Training :)

Sunday 6th July 2008

Well, at last we are on the Potty Training mission with our youngest Torr who is exactly 2 and half now.

Due to one thing and another going on in our lives we have delayed the process. Anyway, we have been discussing for a couple of weeks to start introducing Torr to the potty but waiting for the right moment. Especially as now he will say if he has done anything in a nappy and even before he does something on the odd occasion.... so it has at last felt the right time to start. We have had the two potties in his view for a while now and he often sits on them just as part of his copying thing but in his nappy.

Anyway, the whole process had become a bit daunting again to me, especially as the one thing I hardly remember with my eldest sons when I was potty training him, was actually much to do with actually potty training him ....he was started off by a friend who initially looked after him while I was at work (having gone back to work when he was just two) and then the process was taken over by the nursery he eventually went too. And of course we continued at home with him but my memories have faded over that so much, whereas I remember so many other things about my eldest sons baby hood.

So as I said my memories are very limited to doing the potty training thing, although of course I am aware of the routines and things you have to do to help them get into using a potty. Still never the less it has felt daunting the second time around but I needn't have worried as Torr has been a star, and because he is ready to do it now, with more understanding from him about it all as he is older.

I started properly on Friday with him. I took his nappy off after I knew he had done his number 2's ...so to concentrate on the easier no 1's side of it first.... and let him run around bare bottomed. Then I got ready for the weeing on the floor, and trying to get him on the potty without frightening him. He weed a couple of times on the floor which of course I didn't tell him off for as you just don't ...but cleaned up as you do ... but it was apparent that he was getting increasingly more upset with weeing on the floor.... and after about the 4th time of doing this, and being upset because he missed the security of his nappy, even trying to get me to put one back on him... he then held on to his wee for ages, and kept crying here and there because he was desparate to let it out... and saying poo poo which his way of saying he needs to do something or has done something... I tried to show him the potty but he refused to then sit on it....then he could hold no longer and did a huge wee on the floor which I managed to get him on the potty for the last bit...to which I hugely praised him showing him his little bit of wee in the potty. We then did a "wee wee in a potty dance" with us both clapping (yes I must have looked deranged but hey!!) and it seemed to click with him at that very moment... that he was supposed to do it in the potty ...you could just see it in his face.

But then he had an adverse reaction to it all, as he refused to get off the potty for quite a while after that ....continuing to wee in the potty on and off as he sat there. Bless him.... I tried to coax him off but it was as if the potty became his security like the nappy before...he even got up and moved the potty around with him on his bottom - bless him

But since that first wee in his potty he has not weed on the floor at all, although we are expecting him to have accidents, instead only going in his potty for the last three days...he still occasionally sits on it for a long time leaving a red mark on his bare behind - bless him.... but is now more at ease to run around and go back to his potty when he needs a wee. Bringing his accomplishment to us with a huge grin and we clap and cheer, and take him to the toilet where he gets to say goodbye to it as he flushes it away. We have yet to do the poo side of it and leave a nappy off to go out... but one step at a time

But I have to say again what a complete Star he has been since we have started the potty training.... he has taken to it so well and I can see him going with out a nappy in the day before long which will be cool

Anyway, I am sure I will write more about all of this again before long, if you can stomach the subject hehehe
